For information on product specifications, preservative and antibiotic, refer to the WHO website on Prequalified Vaccines.
To be injected by subcutaneous or intramuscular route. Once opened, multi-dose vials should be kept between 2ºC and +8 ºC and discarded at the end of session.
Infants should receive at least three doses of IPV at minimum intervals of 4 weeks in the first six months of life. Most countries give IPV using the same schedule as DTP. IPV can be given safely and effectively at the same time as measles, rubella, mumps, DTP, DT, TT, Td, BCG, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b and yellow fever vaccines and vitamin A supplementation.
A mild erythematous reaction at the site of injection has sometimes been observed accompanied in a few cases by a moderate fever.
Vaccination of persons with an acute, febrile illness should be deferred until after recovery; persons with a history of hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including 2-phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, neomycin, streptomycin and polymixin B. Individuals infected with immunodeficiency virus (HIV), both asymptomatic and symptomatic, should be immunized with IPV according to standard schedules.
Transport and Storage:
Vaccine is potent if stored between +2°C and +8°C until the expiry date indicated on the vial. The vaccine must not be frozen.
